Ever since I started my business as a Photographer, Prince Edward County has been the region I have served the most. I have been lucky to see it grow and blossom and with that, so have I. Whenever I have strived to grow in Photography, I have nurtured that growth by educating with those that I think are the best in this business. I have taken some incredible workshops with equally incredible photographers.
Over the last two years I’ve been lucky to see a strong growth in my family photography business. More families are vacationing in the area and are looking for someone to capture the precious moments. So, I decided it was time to increase my family photography education.
As I have a background in Photojournalism I love documenting moments, and not just capturing the pretty pictures. I want my photos to tell a story about childhood, life, and what that is (in it’s real form). Kirsten Lewis, is a Denver based photographer, who is leading the charge of Documentary Family Photography. She has become, in my opinion, one of the most successful and sought after family photographers out there. If you check out her work you will see why. Childhood in it’s purest form is written across every image. You feel like you are experiencing the moment she has captured in the picture she has made. Naturally, this meant I wanted to learn what she had to teach me.
Mentoring with Kirsten was eye-opening for me. I was frustrated with myself after the first day. At times, I forgot what it meant to press a shutter button, to capture a moment, and the reasoning for it all. You see making images that matter is not just a matter of taking as many pics in a single day. It’s waiting for a moment, it’s watching for behaviours that are unique to an individual, and last but certainly not least, it’s composition.
I can not put into words how thankful I am for the experience mentoring with Kirsten. But I know I will be a better photographer for my clients moving forward because of it.
I know that as long as I stay a photographer, Prince Edward County will be my home-base. So, if you or someone you know, are looking for family images that are true to your children’s childhood, I would love to hear from you.
In the meantime, here are a few images from my second mentoring day in Denver.
